Britten Sinfonia at Lunch
Britten Sinfonia’s award-winning lunchtime series returns for a new season in October 2010 and continues to bring some of the finest chamber repertoire to audiences interspersed with contemporary music which has been specially commissioned for the series. This season Britten Sinfonia has co-commissioned with London's Wigmore Hall some of Britain's most renowned composers; Peter Maxwell Davies, Julian Philips, Simon Holt and rising Mexican star Enrico Chapela.
Britten Sinfonia at Lunch was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Chamber Music Award 2009. Now in its sixth season, the series tours to Birmingham, Cambridge, London, Norwich and Paris. The Cambridge concerts are recorded by BBC Radio 3 for broadcast in Spring 2011.

Britten Sinfonia At Lunch October

Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet is an acknowledged masterpiece and at the heart of this opening concert in Britten Sinfonia’s award-winning lunchtime series. Arguable his best known chamber work, it’s a piece hugely admired by two composers also featured in this concert. The celebrated composer James MacMillan is represented by four miniatures each dedicated to important figures in his life, including Brother Walfrid, founder of Celtic football club, and fellow Scottish composers Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and Sally Beamish. Maxwell Davies turns the tables with a brand new work in tribute to James MacMillan, co-commissioned by Britten Sinfonia and Wigmore Hall.
