Britten Ceremony of Carols
Britten Saint Nicholas

Britten's Ceremony of Carols was written in 1942, shortly before he wrote his prolific Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra. The Ceremony consists of eleven movements, songs in essence, the texts of which came from poems by Gerald Bullett; the text is in Middle English. Saint Nicholas traces the legend, life and joyful death of Saint Nicholas, ending the cantata, and the concert, with the London New hymn, famously titled “God moves in a mysterious way.”
