Nico Muhly New work (World première tour)
John Adams Shaker Loops
A programme of music from both sides of the Atlantic that delves into the subtle and rich sonorities of strings and voice. This concert offers a rare opportunity to hear celebrated tenor, Mark Padmore paired with the exuberant and imaginative violinist Pekka Kuusisto in a new work by Nico Muhly. A protégé of Philip Glass, Nico Muhly is gaining a reputation as being one of the most impressive innovators of new music, effortlessly crossing the boundaries between classical and pop.
“Impish über-talent Nico Muhly, known to some as Philip Glass’s protégé, to others as the guy who helps make Björk, Rufus Wainwright, and Antony sound better, and to most as the one of the next great hopes for the future of classical music” New York Magazine
"...he's a huge, charismatic talent. Let's see more of him." The Times on Pekka Kuusisto
"Padmore's great gift, apart from his prodigous technical ability, whether to float a line with perfect legato or to enter pianissimo at the top of his range, is to sing from the soul." The Evening Standard
Nico Muhly’s new work is co-commissioned by Britten Sinfonia, Muziekcentrum Frits Philips Eindhoven and Tapiola Sinfonietta.
The concert in Cockermouth is in aid of the Cumbria Flood Relief Fund.
