For Children and Young People
Colman School, photograph by Claire Borley
Many of our projects involve young people in music, as performers, composers and listeners. We work with children of all ages and backgrounds, from babies and toddlers to young musicians embarking on their performing careers.
Schools which are bringing groups to our concerts can access a range of related resources and activities. We can tailor programme notes to suit the age and experience of the group, and we can offer opportunities to meet musicians and composers who will be able to tell the group more about what to expect during the concert, and answer any questions afterwards. See our Get Instrumental! page for more information
We also work with schools on longer-term projects related to the repertoire we are performing. These are planned in conjunction with teachers, and can last for anything from a day to several months. See our highlights page for examples of past projects, or contact us for information on how to get involved.
Britten Sinfonia is an Arts Award Welcome centre. For more information on what we can offer for anyone doing an Arts Award, click here.
Projects during the 2009/10 season include:
- Talks and workshops linked to lunchtime concerts in Cambridge, Norwich, London and Birmingham.
- Work with Pupil Referral Units in Cambridgeshire, using music technology to introduce pupils to composing and recording techniques, and using live instruments to introduce them to classical music.
- A Family Music Day in Cambridge with workshops introducing strings, wind and brass, gamelan, percussion and guitar to young people.
- Various workshops in schools using Britten Sinfonia's concert repertoire as their inspiration. These workshops can revolve around performance, composition, improvisation...
Sounds Like... game
Why is it that some people who are good at music are also good at languages? Research suggests that music, language, speech and singing are closely linked from the earliest stages of development.
Can music help us to learn languages? In preparation for Britten Sinfonia's tour to South America in 2007, we learned some Spanish and Portuguese. To help us remember the words we devised this interactive game. Test your musical and linguistic skills by clicking the link below:
